Yeast Infection – Meet the Enemies

…of the yeast infestation that causes you chronic burning, itching, pain, discharge and redness. Meet the enemies of the most common cause of such misery – candida albicans. Getting to know the adversary means discovering the most effective means to end the “dream home environment” your body frequently becomes for this nasty microscopic fungi. The enemies in this case are actually your best friends. Let’s look at a few of the most important substances in the battle against candida:

Most doctors and naturopathic physicians say that we should drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water daily, but many people may need a lot more than that. Simply drinking enough water daily greatly reduces your tendency to become the host of a yeast infection. Because you are drinking more water and urinating more frequently, your body will be able to flush out the sugars that feed the yeast, but be sure to drink water that is pure and free from toxins.

Oregano Oil

This is a fantastic plant with many healing properties and is an extremely potent foe of yeast growth. Be sure that the type of oregano oil you choose has a high carvacrol content, as this is the active ingredient. For sensitive areas that have yeast infection, avoid using straight oregano oil by diluting it in olive oil or coconut butter. You only need one drop of oregano oil in one teaspoon of your chosen medium. Apply a small amount of this mixture onto the affected area and massage in.

The anti-fungal, sulfur compound active in garlic, allicin, works to kill off the yeast overgrowth that causes your symptoms, restoring the healthy balance of your vaginal flora. It’s said that 1 milligram of allicin has a potency of 15 standard units of penicillin. Garlic is also a natural antiseptic, has anti bacterial properties, along with actually killing yeast. (Bonus fact: In a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, allicin powder was found to reduce the incidence of the common cold by over 50%!)

Ordinary, everyday kitchen garlic can treat your yeast infection naturally. Just ask any baker about the properties of garlic when it is added to a yeast product!

Inserting a large, fresh clove of garlic that has been superficially cut repeatedly along its length, into the vagina at bedtime. This practice can help take care of even a severe infection. (Sewing a string into the clove also allows for easy removal.) You may need to repeat this process for two to four nights before the condition is totally resolved.

Use the freshest garlic you can find. Fresh garlic is not only far more potent than old garlic; it is also less likely to have developed flaws that disrupt the integrity of the cloves. Garlic is not an instant cure for yeast infections, but combined with the other forces working against yeast infestation, it is a steadfast destroyer of yeast proliferation.

Yogurt contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacterium which is one of your body’s “friendly bacteria.” (A good alternative to yogurt is to buy acidophilus in any other form. Your local natural food store should offer a variety of choices: tablets, capsules, liquids – many are even non-dairy). Place the plain, unflavored yogurt containing sugar-free, live acidophilus cultures in plastic tampon applicators and freeze them to use next time you get a yeast infection. Apply once or twice a day until at least a day after your symptoms clear up. Another possibility is to insert acidophilus pills from your local supermarket or health food store (look in the refrigerated section.

Eating yogurt on a daily basis is a good remedy for building immunity to yeast infection, and it’s also something that you should do if you’re in between yeast infections. Choose the all-natural yogurt will aid you in building up the natural bacteria in your system for it to fight and ward off naturally any infections that you have.
